Garvey After-School Programme

LH’s After-P1120900School Programme emerged in response to a demand, from the community, for spaces where children could get help with their homework. Members of staff Initially started with a small group of children and over time expanded the programme’s curriculum to provide Literacy Training, Mathematics, Art and Craft, Computer and Capoeira classes throughout the school year. Reading Competitions target children’s reading and comprehension skills while providing opportunities for teachers to ascertain and measure children’s literacy levels.

P1130428We also host presentations to enhance student engagement. Over the years, guest speakers presented on topics such as Children’s Rights, Dental Hygiene and Children’s contribution to society. Through our outreach, we aim to inspire, excite and instill positive notions of black self-identity among children from the surrounding communities.

This effort would not be possible without the assistance of volunteers from institutions such as UTECH and Excelsior Community College.
